CORNERSTONE RESCUE MISSION BIRD & BISON BANQUET SUPPORTS THOSE IN NEED

RAPID CITY (February 28th, 2013) — Cornerstone Rescue Mission will hold their largest annual fundraiser at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center on Saturday, March 2nd, 5:30pm. The event will include a silent auction featuring donated items from a variety of local businesses and individuals. Provided by Canyon Lake Chophouse, a pheasant and bison dinner is where the event gets its name. In addition, Cornerstone Rescue Mission is excited to welcome guest speaker Anne Jackson, who has authored inspiring works such as Permission to Speak Freely. For those who’d like to shop for a good cause, the Cornerstone Thrift Store Boutique will be open, as well as a raffle.

While the annual event provides an entertaining evening, its purpose is also an important one. A benefit for the Cornerstone Rescue Mission’s homeless families, all proceeds will support the organization. Volunteer Coordinator Camille Tiegen says “The fundraiser is a place where we can all get together and network, and we’ll also have a video that explains our different facilities. The event just creates great awareness for people who may be unfamiliar with the Cornerstone Rescue Mission and our purpose.”

Tickets are available to the public, and can be purchased by contacting the Cornerstone Rescue Mission at 718-8712. Says Tiegen “We encourage everyone in the community to come and have a good time, and become more aware of the organization. This fundraiser helps us meet the physical and spiritual needs of our homeless community.”

RAPID CITY RADIO CONTROL CAR CLUB RACES PROMOTE FAMILY TOGETHERNESS & ACTIVITY

RAPID CITY (February 22nd, 2013) — There’s nothing like the adrenaline rush of a nail biting car race – even if the driver is operating from a wooden platform. This weekend, the Rapid City Radio Control Car Club will hold its largest annual racing event, in conjunction with the Counts Car Club Car Show. Practice will commence on Friday, followed by concours judging on Saturday and four rounds of qualifying races. The main event will be held from 10am to 4pm on Sunday, February 24th, with approximately nine different car classes taking to the course.

With thirty contestants registered, this weekend’s event promises to showcase skilled drivers and their custom cars. Built from kits, drivers add their own electronics to each car, as well as custom paint to the bodies. Club President Frank Alloway has been a member of the Rapid City Radio Control Car Club for fifteen years, and president for two. “The races are a good way to spend time with the kids,” says Alloway. “They’re open to kids, teenagers, adults, there’s no age limit. We have a kid right now who’s five years old and racing. He started when he was four,” Alloway explains. “It’s just a great family environment, and something positive to keep kids out of trouble.”

The Rapid City Radio Control Car Club Races are open to the public, with registration ending Friday at 5:00pm. The club currently consists of 42 members, who meet every Thursday evening in the Central States Fairgrounds Creative Arts Building to race their custom radio controlled cars.

BLACK HILLS STOCK SHOW AND RODEO® PRCA RODEO STOCK PREVIEW

RAPID CITY (January 23, 2013) — Looking at the origins of the phrase “Luck of the Draw” you’ll find a number of references related to cards. If you ask a cowboy they will tell you that it is indeed derived from gambling, just not the kind you do at a table. Dating back to when the West was a wild frontier what kind of mount a cowboy had could determine everything. Through the years as the cowboy has moved from the frontier to the arena, this fact has remained the same.  As the 36th Annual Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo® gets ready to kick off, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association has released the stock line-up for the five performance rodeos that will take place over the next two weeks and there are some pairings that shouldn’t be missed.

Bareback Riding Preview:

With a field that includes the two-time reining PRCA World Champion Kaycee Feild, former World Champion Bobby Mote, PBR veteran Ross Coleman, and a number of WNFR qualifiers it could be anyone’s game.  Look for Utah cowboy Kaycee Feild to open up the PRCA rodeo on Saturday afternoon with a strong score aboard the Burns Rodeo bareback horse High Plains while facing some competition in Texas cowboy Clint Cannon on Burch Rodeos’ Hard Luck.  As the rodeo moves into the second weekend the top scores could be challenged by the following:  Utah cowboy Caleb Bennett aboard Burch Rodeos’ Angel Dust, North Dakota cowboy Casey Breuer on Bar C5’s WNFR bareback Make-Up Face, Minnesota cowboy Tanner Aus on Sutton Rodeo’s WNFR horse South Point.

Best of the rest:  On Friday night February 1st look for Whitewood cowboy Jake Smith to have a strong showing on Bar C5’s Good Times. Saturday afternoon February 2nd, Texas cowboy Ross Coleman a Professional Bull Riding World Finalist will be testing his skills in a new event aboard Sutton Rodeo’s Rambo.  Saturday night February 2nd, former PRCA World Champion Bobby Mote and WNFR Qualifier Steven Dent will look to make a strong showing.

Saddle Bronc Riding Preview:

South Dakota is breeding ground for both the cowboy and livestock legends of Saddle Bronc Riding.  With names like Tibbs, Etbauer, and Tipperary there are some big shoes to fill for anyone daring to compete in this event. This year’s field of contestants includes a number of South Dakotan’s who are looking to become legends including former PRCA World Champions Chad Ferley and Jeff Willert along with a number of WNFR Qualifiers, including: Jesse Bail, Red Lemmel, Cody Taton, Chuck Schmidt, and Cole and JJ Elshere.  Not to be outdone by South Dakota, Utah is making their presence known in Rapid City, as reining PRCA World Champion Jesse Wright along with his brothers, former PRCA World Champion Cody Wright, WNFR Qualifier Jake Wright, Alex Wright and Spencer Wright round out the field of contestants.  Saturday afternoon January 26th look for there to be a number of solid rides with the competition getting stiff as it rolls into Thursday night January 31st, when Cody Taton takes on Bar C5’s Buckskin Sal.  Saturday night, February 2nd, Minnesota cowboy Tyler Corrington will try and take the round aboard Bar C5’s Biff, but it if you’re looking to gamble, a safe bet for Saddle Bronc Champion would be Texas cowboy Bradley Harter aboard Burch Rodeos’ Lunatic Fringe.

Best of the rest: Thursday night, January 31st, will be showcasing some of the best cowboys the PRCA has to offer with 9 of the 12 man field having competed at the 2011 and/or 2012 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and include three past and present PRCA World Champions.  Friday night, February 1st, Philip cowboy Jace Nelson will try and take on Sutton Rodeos’ PRCA Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year and WNFR Horse of the Finals, Chuckulator.  Jace comes from a ranching family that includes a long line of champions and it will be a good show watching him try to ride this beast; if he can stay on for 8-seconds the score could be big. Saturday afternoon, February 2nd, former PRCA World Champion Jesse Kruse is joined by WNFR Qualifiers Sam Kelts and Tyrell Smith along with Canadian Champion Luke Butterfield.

Bull Riding Preview:

Bull Riding is normally referred to as a young man’s sport but in 2013 Rapid City will be welcoming a host of veterans along with some young stars.  Look for WNFR Qualifiers Corey Navarre, Tate Stratton and Bobby Welsh to set the bar during the first performance Saturday January 26th.  As the rodeo moves into the second weekend it will be CBR Champion and 2011 WNFR Qualifier & Rookie of the Year Chandler Bownds looking to continue his hot streak against Burch Rodeos’ bull Popeye.  Chandler is coming off a surgery that kept him sidelined most of the 2012 season and looks hungry to compete.  Friday night, February 1st, Newell cowboy Taygen Schuelke will look to make a mark aboard Burch Rodeos’ Zombie Zoo and if he can make the whistle will face some stiff competition as veteran cowboys Ardie Maier and Clayton Savage are both out that night.

Best of the rest:  Saturday afternoon, January 26th, look for little known cowboy Joe Frost to make an impression; if his name is familiar to you it may be because you have heard of his cousin, former PRCA World Champion Lane Frost.  Thursday, January 31st, WNFR Qualifiers Cody Whitney and Tag Elliott will try their best to get a paycheck as they face bulls provided by Sutton Rodeo and Burch Rodeo respectively.  On Saturday night, February 2nd, former PRCA World Champion Dustin Elliott will be looking to collect some money as he faces Burch Rodeos’ Go Kat Go.

PRCA Rodeo action begins January 26th and will conclude on February 2nd.  Performances will be Saturday January 26th @ 1:30pm, Thursday January 31st @ 7:30pm, Friday February 1st @ 7:30pm and Saturday February 2nd @ 1:30pm and 7:30pm.  Tickets can be purchased online at www.gotmine.com, by phone at 1-800-GOT-MINE, or in person at the RPCC Box Office.

BLACK HILLS STOCK SHOW AND RODEO® XTREME BULL RIDING LEGENDS IN THE MAKING

RAPID CITY (January 22, 2013) — The year was 1990, and the cowboy making headlines at the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo® was a young gun named Ty Murray.  It was in the Barnett Arena that Ty Murray became only the second man ever to ride the infamous bull Mr. T, and win the round with 86 points.  At the time no one knew they were watching a legend in the making, but it was in Rapid City that Ty made one of his first marks on rodeo history.  Fast forward twenty-three years to this Friday night, and you will have an opportunity to see the son of that infamous bull in the Short-Round of the Xtreme Bull Riding.  Known as Ice T, this bull is just as good as his dad was, as proven last week at the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver, CO. He propelled Minnesota cowboy Brent Stall to the top of the leader board with a 93.  Coincidently Brent is competing Friday night and it is safe to assume he would like a repeat on Ice T.

Ice T of Burns Rodeo isn’t the only bull to be on the lookout for in the short-round on Friday. Sutton Rodeo has brought in a formidable line-up of bulls from a number of top PRCA stock contractors, including the unridden bull Child’s Play of Brookman-Hyland Rodeo, and Burch Rodeos’ great National Finals Rodeo bull Zombie Zoo.  Not to be outdone, the cowboys entered include an all-star line-up; look for 2012 PRCA World Champion Cody Teel to jump to the lead in the first section of bull riding on Friday night aboard Brookman-Hyland’s Mr. Nice Guy.

Looking at Saturday nights’ competition, if there was a pick to be made it would be on Arkansas cowboy Reese Cates. While his name might be new to the PRCA, it isn’t new to the sport.  Cates is a former PBR Rookie of the Year and PBR Finalist, and is looking to leave his mark on the PRCA in 2013.  Joining Reese is a field full of talent, including former PRCA World Champions Dustin Elliott and Shane Proctor along with some young up and comers including one name synonymous with bull riding: Frost.  A young rookie from Utah, Joe Frost is a cousin of the legendary cowboy Lane Frost, and looks to be just as talented.

The bulls that will be seen on Saturday have a love – hate relationship with the riders, and can either propel them to the pay window or leave them with nothing but a mouth full of dirt.  Look for Dakota Lewis to get a high score aboard Burns Rodeos’ bull Shredder, if he can get him covered. Former World Champion JW Harris was 86 on him at the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver earlier this month, and he helped South Dakota cowboy Ardie Maier take home 2nd in the average at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo this past July.  For those 10 lucky cowboys that make the short-round on Saturday, they will have the opportunity to take on Sutton Rodeos’ Crystal Springs Peach. This bull won a round at the 2011 WNFR, and then went on to be unridden at the 2012 WNFR.

The competition this weekend will pit veteran cowboys against the young up and comers, but the question shouldn’t be who is going to come out on top, it should be who will you be watching make history?

Xtreme Bull Riding will take place in the Barnett Arena at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, Friday, January 25th @ 7:30pm and Saturday, January 26th @ 7:30pm.  Tickets can be purchased online at www.gotmine.com, by phone at 1-800-GOT-MINE, or in person at the RPCC Box Office.
