Sevendust, In This Moment, and Pop Evil

Get ready to rock at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. This Monday, May 13th, three of the industry’s most sought-after bands will be heating things up in a concert you won’t want to miss. Sevendust, In This Moment, and Pop Evil will unite to deliver pulse-pounding entertainment and a night you won’t soon forget.

Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, Sevendust made their debut in 1994 as “Crawlspace.” After a name change, the group released their melodically heavy self-titled debut in 1997. The album featured one of modern rock’s greatest drummers, Morgan Rose, and the R&B driven vocals of Lajon Witherspoon. Today, the band’s music appeals to audiences around the world for its diverse range in style and tone. From soft and melodic to fast-paced and heavy, the group has proven themselves one of the most skilled in the industry. Throughout the course of their career Sevendust has sold over 4 million records in the United States, and their success only seems to gain momentum.

After releasing ‘Blood,’ the fourth studio album from In This Moment, fans discovered just how resilient the band’s core has become. Following a lineup change over the past year, In This Moment has remained a strong and cohesive unit, and ‘Blood’ is a testament to that endurance. Originally formed in Los Angeles by Maria Brink and Chris Howorth in 2005, In This Moment has secured their seat as one of metal’s leading acts. In a male-dominated genre, Brink proves she can play just as tough as the boys with her hypnotic vocals and edgy allure. With several tracks that incorporate an industrial grind and undeniably catchy lyrics, Brink’s vocals have been credited as some of the most powerful you’ll hear live on stage.

In the twelve years since their formation, Pop Evil has seen their share of change. Members, style, and labels have come and gone, yet the Michigan group has only grown tighter and more focused over time. Most recently Pop Evil saw the addition of drummer Chachi Riot and guitarist Nick Fuelling, as well as their decision to not use acoustic guitars. Their latest album, ‘Onyx’ showcases the band as they explore new territory and a dedication to the transitional world of rock. Continually evolving with a fresh style for their audience, it’s the melding of pulsating bass lines and a steady groove that keeps things interesting.

It’s an evening you won’t want to miss as Sevendust, In This Moment, and Pop Evil ignite the stage on Monday, May 13th. Doors will open at 6:30pm, with the show starting at 7:30pm. Tickets are still available, so be sure to get yours and join us for a night of electrifying entertainment by some of the industry’s most acclaimed musicians.

Night after night has drawn packed houses in venues spanning the United States leg of the tour, which shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

It’s been almost seven years since Chris Daughtry was infamously voted off Season 5 of American Idol. Since then, he’s proven time and time again that his fourth place finish would have no bearing on future success. Going on to play with legends like Bon Jovi for sell out shows of every size, Daughtry continues to break the mold as his fans follow every step of the way.

This weekend is Rapid City’s chance to experience the standing ovation-worthy performances we’ve heard rave reviews about since Daughtry’s debut. A highly likable performer who has established his place in the music industry, fans are sure to be pleased with the riveting performance and entertaining evening they’ve been counting on.

Accompanying Daughtry is industry favorite 3 Doors Down, showcasing the unique chemistry between two bands who can deliver a rock explosion of past hits and new material.  With nearly 20 years as a band under their belt, 3 Doors Down is no stranger to the stage, and it shows throughout their entire set. The quintet just released their first ever Greatest Hits package, and the band’s set includes hits like “Kryptonite” “When I’m Gone” “Here Without You” as well as new tracks like “One Light” and “Goodbyes.” Their delivery is energetic and inspired, consisting of the perfect blend of rock anthems and heartfelt ballads.

While Daughtry and 3 Doors Down typically cater to different crowds, it’s this combination that wins over new fans for both bands. There’s something for every listener on this tour, from the hard rock anthems we know and love, to the legendary ballads and country-inspired themes that make the show such a phenomenal success.

Road to the Stage: Event Booking 101, Part II

Last week, we explored the challenges of booking a national event, beginning with economics. Our facility must house enough seats to generate sales that will cover the equipment and artist costs of a national tour. By expanding into a larger facility that is compatible with other venues in our region, event promoters will once again consider Rapid City for their tour.

The Right Route

Hence, the routing phase begins. The Black Hills are a breathtaking destination. With that said, most acts will not visit one single location. All venues must fit into a tour route that allows a show to perform on a tight schedule, often one day after the next.  Fortunately for Rapid City, our location in western South Dakota is an ideal fit for many shows touring east to west. Following a route which often includes Chicago, Des Moines, Sioux City, Sioux Falls, Minneapolis, and Denver, our community provides a natural stopping point along the way.

One key factor is a Department of Transportation limitation that regulates the distance truck drivers can travel in one day. Generally, this amount is 400 miles between facilities, so Rapid City is a perfect stop. Of course, there are other considerations accounted for as well. As discussed in the first blog, the size of each venue is always a primary factor in the routing process. Next is a community’s track record. Will a promoter be able to sell enough tickets? Residents of each region are known for their preference for certain types of tours. For instance, the west coast often attracts many pop artists, while the east coast tends to drawn well-established performers, and the heartland is known for a fondness of country-based tours.

Promoters must take all of these factors into account when planning a route, keeping their artist’s best interests in mind at all times. As the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center works to attract national tours, the journey will involve two key phases: An expanded arena size, and our ideal location in western South Dakota.

As our facility embarks on another busy season of premier entertainment, educational, and cultural events, we look forward to the exciting possibilities that the future brings. Attracting top touring events doesn’t always come easily, but it’s a challenge we welcome with great anticipation.

Cranked-Up Crowd-Pleaser: Broadway’s Rock of Ages!

We couldn’t be more excited to announce that Broadway tickets for the awesomely-rad Rock of Ages will go on sale this Saturday, September 22nd at 10:00am. For all those fans that have been waiting in anticipation of this year’s Broadway Play Series, Rock of Ages is sure to get things started with a bang. Grab your leg warmers, your studded leather jacket, and your neon pumps, because the 1980’s are taking over!

Set in 1987 on the Sunset Strip, Rock of Ages is the story of a small town girl who meets a big city rocker in LA’s most famous rock club, amidst all the greatest hits of the 80’s. Jam out to all your favorite tunes, including top rock songs by REO Speedwagon, Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Poison, Foreigner, Whitesnake, Pat Benatar, and many more!

This family show is commonly described as an “arena rock love story.” What exactly is “arena rock?” Great question! Arena rock is a variation on the typical hard rock and heavy metal of the late 70’s and 80’s, and more commercially-oriented with slick productions and anthemic choruses. AKA, the feel good power ballads of the 80’s! This generation of rock music will have you out of your seat and right back in the days of some of our nation’s most beloved bands.

While arena rock was huge in the 80’s, so were many other forms of entertainment. Just for fun, let’s take a trip down memory lane, all the way back to 1987! The number one biggest hit that year was the Bangle’s “Walk Like an Egyptian.” The top rated TV show was “The Cosby Show,” and the biggest box office hit was Three Men and A Baby. Les Miserables won a Tony Award for Best Musical, and the New York Giants won the Super Bowl. Feeling a little nostalgic yet? Oh yeah, and who knew that the Broadway cast of Rock of Ages set a Guinness World Record in 2009 for the Largest Air Guitar Ensemble? That’s right – 810 participants, including audience members and fans played air guitar simultaneously. That’s just how they roll.

In case you need some more inspiration to get your groove on, Joe Dziemianowicz of Daily News calls Rock of Ages “The real deal! A cranked-up crowd-pleaser!” Ellen Carpenter of Spin Magazine proclaims the production “A must see! Pure Broadway Gold.” And the New York Times hails the show as “Absurdly enjoyable! About as guilty as pleasures get. The siren call of those guitars and sing-along choruses is impossible to resist.”

Come join the biggest 80’s party of the year as the cast and crew of Broadway’s Rock of Ages get ready to rock solid on the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center stage. Performances will take place November 3rd and 4th, so make sure and (LINK) get your Broadway tickets beginning Saturday, September 22nd!

Bob Dylan: Legendary American Songwriter

This Friday, August 17th, Bob Dylan and his Band will take the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center stage, with the iconic American artist performing songs that have shaped a nation. Hailed as one of the most influential musicians of modern times, some of Dylan’s renowned works include ‘Tangled Up In Blue,’ ‘Like a Rolling Stone,’ and ‘The Times They Are a-Changin’.’ Often an expression of his personal life and the sentiments of the 60’s and 70’s, Dylan became a figure head for social unrest and anti-war movements.

However, the impact of Dylan’s talent reaches further than most realize, with his songwriting credits spanning an incredible array of musicians. For instance, Eric Clapton’s reggae-influenced ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’ is actually a song written by Bob Dylan, initially for the 1973 film Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. Often credited to The Byrds, ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ was originally written and performed by Dylan on his 1965 album Bringing It All Back Home. ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ was the debut single by The Byrds, and would go on to initiate the folk rock boom of 1965 and 1966. First released in 1968 as smash hit ‘Mighty Quinn’ by British band Manfred Mann, the song was first written and recorded by Dylan during The Basement Tapes sessions in 1967. Also written by Dylan in 1967 was ‘I Shall Be Released,’ which later was released by The Band on their debut album, Music from Big Pink.

The cultural influences of Bob Dylan are present in many of the iconic songs of the 60’s and 70’s, a telling portrait of changing times and a folk-rock revolution. With Dylan at the songwriting helm, many musicians who would go on to become significant cultural figures got their start with assistance from Dylan. One of American music’s legendary icons, we are excited to host An Evening with Bob Dylan and his Band at 8:00pm, Friday, August 17th.
