Jeff Dunham, Country Fair Arts & Crafts Show, RUSH Hockey, and More!

It’s not every weekend that you can take in a side-splitting ventriloquist, a Country Fair Arts and Crafts Show, a hockey game, and so much more! That’s why you won’t want to miss this weekend’s upcoming events at the Civic Center…

Jeff Dunham

On Saturday, November 13th, ventriloquist Jeff Dunham will take the Barnett Arena stage at 8:00 pm. Born in Dallas, Texas in 1962, Dunham has been praised as “America’s favorite comedian” by Slate.com, and is the top-grossing standup act in North America according to Pollstar. He has been the only person to receive the “Ventriloquist of the Year Award” twice, and was voted the Top Comic in Comedy Central’s “Stand-Up Showdown” by fans.

Dunham’s popularity originates from the wide variety of characters he presents on stage, from a grumpy old man named Walter, to a talking jalapeno on a stick, conveniently named Jose Jalapeno on a Stick. Dunham’s puppets have been described by Time as “politically incorrect, gratuitously insulting and ill tempered,” and audiences are loving every minute of Dunham’s outrageously honest show.

Country Fair Arts & Crafts Show

This Saturday and Sunday also brings the Country Fair Arts & Crafts Show, a holiday showcase of hundreds of festive items to decorate your home. From 9:00 am – 5:00 pm on Saturday, and from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm on Sunday, you’ll be able to browse through an enormous selection of hand-crafted, local items to spruce up your home, or place under the tree as holiday gifts. As the weather finally turns chilly, what could be better than getting out of the cold to come shopping with your friends at one of the largest holiday displays of the season? See you there!

RUSH Hockey

Welcome home RUSH! This weekend, our hockey team will take on the Mississippi RiverKings at 7:05 on Friday, November 12th, and the Tulsa Oilers at 7:05 on Saturday, November 13th. Come and cheer on everyone’s favorite home team as they battle their way to the 2011 President’s Cup!

…And if a ventriloquist, an arts and crafts show, and a hockey game aren’t enough, be sure to check out the Abbey Road Band in the Fine Arts Theatre on Saturday at 2:00 pm. The Beatles tribute band will take you back to the 1960’s, and leave you wanting to stay there. Still looking for something to do? How about the 2010 Martial Arts Championship, presented by Dynamic Martial Arts at 10:00 am on Saturday?

There’s something for everyone this weekend, so bring your holiday cheer, a zest for fun, and you’ll fit right in!

A Straight-Shootin’ Partner – Rodney Carrington

Life can be demanding and stressful…Deadlines to meet, bills to pay, that crazy family member who causes all the drama. Sometimes, we need someone who can relate, who can take the stage and remind us that it is only life, after all, and we shouldn’t be so dang serious about it…

Enter Rodney Carrington. If you’re looking for an evening of side-splitting humor, you won’t want to miss one of the highest grossing comedians in the country as he makes his appearance at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center on Thursday, September 16th at 7:00 p.m.

The East Texas native has certainly managed to devise a comedic style all his own. The comedian, actor and writer has recorded eight major record label comedy albums, starred in his own television sitcom, “Rodney,” and co-wrote and co-starred in the film “Beer for my Horses” with fellow country singer Toby Keith.

Yet despite his association with the country sector, fans of all musical preferences are drawn to his routines. His show focuses on topics that everyone can relate to – married life, men and women, pickup trucks – regardless of the radio stations they’ve got programmed in their cars. According to Carrington, his performance “…All comes down to being honest and real.”

Aside from being hysterically candid, his routine is also spontaneous and continuously evolving. Carrington, who generally comes on stage in perfectly creased jeans, a western shirt, and a cowboy hat, doesn’t believe in scripting his show – many times he tries out new material on a whim. He also possesses a unique likeability. Maybe it’s his easy smile or his charming good looks – whatever the case, audiences are eating it up and coming back for more.

Although some of his material may be edgy, (you’ll want to leave the kids at home) Carrington’s intent is never to offend. His purpose is entertainment. Sure, life has its serious moments, but even those are subject to a few jabs. Carrington’s show has evolved out of what makes him laugh, and his audience seems to be in agreement.

So come and escape into Carrington’s world on September 16th at 7:00 p.m. – it may be a little wacky, possibly unpredictable, but it won’t disappoint.

As Carrington says, “Let yourself go – it’s ok to laugh.”
