The Neighbors Head Back to School!

What a busy couple of years it has been for Rapid City Central High School, our neighbors across the street. With Labor Day weekend approaching and the faint strains of the marching band practicing in our parking lot during the mornings, it’s time for another school year to begin. However, when classes resume next Monday, August 27th, we imagine there will be an added sense of excitement in the building. This year, staff and students will be able to fully utilize a completely remodeled and expanded facility.

While the expansion project was underway, Rushmore Plaza Civic Center staff was happy to let students park in our lots, and we’re glad we could be of assistance during a hectic time. Now that construction is completed, students will once again be able to park in the Central High School lot. Amazingly, no parking spots were lost despite the large facility expansion, something that is sure to make life easier for both staff and students.

Also making life better at Central High School? A new freshman wing and science wing, which are now fully finished. There has also been remodel work done to the gymnasium, athletic facilities, and career center. Phase II of the project included a new state of the art theatre and fine arts remodel. The state’s largest school has now doubled in size, part of a 10-year master facility plan that also includes transitioning Dakota Middle School into Rapid City High School, building East Middle School, and shifting elementary school buildings into all-day kindergarten facilities.

The Rushmore Plaza Civic Center staff would like to wish all faculty and students a school year of excitement, safety, and plenty of learning as they enjoy the new opportunities brought by the expansion. Each year we feel fortunate to be involved with Rapid City Area Schools, from hosting speakers and concerts in our building, to marching band practice in the parking lot. We look forward to another great year for the new and improved school, and our Black Hills community.

The public is invited to attend an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony at Central High School on Thursday, August 23rd, from 5pm to 7pm.
